Compare Other Bank Options
Learn what outside (other bank) lenders are, why they can mean a lower payment, and how to explore the options LeaseMax found for your deal.
When you lease a car, the financing comes from a lender: and you usually have more than one to choose from. LeaseMax can show you what outside banks (also labeled Other Banks in the app) are willing to offer for your exact car. This article explains those options and how to explore them.
Captive vs. outside banks, in plain terms
Every lease is financed by a lender, and there are two kinds:
- A captive lender is the car brand's own finance arm. This is what a dealership usually steers you toward.
- An outside bank (what the app calls Other Banks or Outside Banks; finance people say "non-captive") is a lender that isn't owned by the car brand. Sometimes that means a lower monthly payment, better terms, or an easier approval path.
LeaseMax compares both for the car you built, so you don't have to take the dealership's preferred option on faith.
Why a shopper might use an outside bank
LeaseMax may highlight an outside-bank opportunity right on your dashboard. Depending on your deal, you may see a message like one of these next to your quote:
- Lower payment available: an outside bank is offering a lower lease payment than the manufacturer's bank.
- Lower payment with a different term: there's a lower payment if you're open to a different number of months.
- Similar payments available: the manufacturer's bank and outside banks are offering similar payments, and an outside bank may be easier to get approved through.
- Manufacturer's bank has the best payment: but you can still explore outside banks for options that may be easier to qualify for if you have credit challenges.
In short, the Advantage of Outside Banks that LeaseMax highlights includes lower monthly payments, true interest rates, no end-of-month bonuses or bias, flexible credit options, and shorter terms with early-exit options.
Before you start
- You need a saved deal on your dashboard. (See Build Your Lease Deal.)
- The Other Banks control stays on your deal row even when outside options aren't available. It is shown but disabled (with a short explanation) if the vehicle can only be leased through the manufacturer's bank.
Steps
- Open your dashboard and find the deal you want to look into.
- Next to that deal, select the Other Banks button. If LeaseMax found savings, this may instead read Save $X/mo: that's the estimated amount you could save each month.
- You'll land on the Other Banks page (
/other-banks). Read through the sections from top to bottom:- Get the Same Car, Lower Payment: the headline idea that outside-bank financing can mean lower payments, better terms, and no hidden dealer markups.
- Why Dealership Banks Cost You More: explains how dealers profit when you finance through their captive bank, and contrasts a "Dealership Bank" (dealer bonus, hidden profit) with an "Outside Bank" (transparent savings, honest rates).
- The Advantage of Outside Banks: the list of benefits above.
- How It Works: your starting point for pulling your actual outside-bank quotes.
- If your deal has estimated savings, the page shows a "Calculate how much you will save" card with your monthly savings, the number of months, and the total: for example, an amount per month multiplied by your term. Otherwise, you'll see a "Get My Other Bank Quotes" button.
- When you're ready to see your real, detailed outside-bank numbers, select Get My Other Bank Quotes (or the savings card). This starts the process of unlocking your other-banks deal sheet.
The savings figures on this page are estimates based on the deal you built. Your final, lender-by-lender numbers appear on your other-banks deal sheet once it's generated.
Not ready to commit? You can select Back at any time to return to your dashboard. Your deal stays saved.
Troubleshooting
- A spinner appears and nothing happens yet: LeaseMax is getting checkout ready. Give it a moment before selecting a button.
- "We could not start your session. Please try again.": Setup was interrupted. Refresh the page or return to your dashboard and re-open Other Banks for that deal.
- A message says you've already unlocked this deal: LeaseMax may show an access/success message from the server. There's nothing more to pay; head to your dashboard to download your other-banks deal sheet.
- The buttons look greyed out and won't respond: They stay inactive until setup finishes. If they never become active, refresh the page or go back and try again.
- The Other Banks button stays greyed out for a specific deal: That car may only be available through the manufacturer's bank, so there are no outside-bank options to compare. The button stays visible but inactive.
